How it works

VA uses 2026 E-5 with-dependents BAH for in-person US campus housing. At 9 credits where 12 is full time, the 75% rate of pursuit rounds to 80%. Housing requires a rate of pursuit greater than 50% and is multiplied by your eligibility tier.

Private tuition is capped at $30,908.34 before benefit-level proration. College books are capped at $1,000.00 per year, with up to $41.67 per credit, prorated by benefit level.

Use VA’s GI Bill Comparison Tool to confirm your school’s benefits. Yellow Ribbon may cover some otherwise uncovered tuition. This estimator covers standard college programs; foreign-school housing and pre-2018 rate protection require VA review.

Frequently asked questions

Why is housing zero at half-time?
VA requires enrollment of more than half time for a monthly housing allowance.
How do I enter in-person housing?
Enter the official 2026 E-5 with-dependents BAH for the campus where you attend most classes. Automated ZIP lookup awaits the official source file.
What about school breaks?
Housing is not paid for breaks; enter full-month equivalents actually in session. Actual partial-month payments may vary.
