The grid assumes a straight rectangular layout with one tile orientation. Diagonal patterns, staggered joints, borders, niches and centred cuts can require more pieces; dry-lay the critical rows before ordering.

Tile quantity is a layout problem

A quick area estimate divides surface area by one tile’s face area. That is useful, but it assumes offcuts can be reused perfectly. A practical straight-grid estimate also counts whole tile modules along the surface length and width:

tiles along a direction = ceiling((surface + joint) ÷ (tile + joint))
base tile count = rows × columns

Adding one joint to the surface before division accounts for joints between tiles without requiring a grout joint beyond the final outer edge. The calculator then adds the selected cutting and breakage allowance and rounds to complete boxes.

Metric wall example

Suppose a wall is 3 metres wide and 2.4 metres high. Tiles are 60 by 30 centimetres with a 3 millimetre joint. Convert every dimension to metres:

tile module width = 0.60 m + 0.003 m
tile module height = 0.30 m + 0.003 m

The calculator counts required modules in both directions and rounds each upward. Multiplying the two whole-direction counts gives a starting layout count. A 10% allowance is then applied and rounded to another whole tile.

If a box contains eight tiles, divide the purchase tile count by eight and round upward. Full-box rounding can create more spare tiles than the percentage alone.

US floor example

For a 10 foot by 8 foot surface using 12 by 24 inch tile, convert surface dimensions or tile dimensions to a common unit. Ten feet is 120 inches and eight feet is 96 inches. With a one-eighth-inch joint, the repeating modules are 12.125 and 24.125 inches, depending on orientation.

Rotating rectangular tiles can change rows and columns. The current calculator uses the entered tile length along the entered surface length. Swap the tile dimensions to compare the other orientation.

Area division versus grid count

Surface area divided by tile area gives a theoretical minimum when every piece is perfectly reusable and grout area is ignored. Real boundaries force whole pieces or cut pieces at the ends of rows. A narrow remainder across several rows can consume many additional tiles even when its total area is small.

The grid approach is conservative for one straight rectangular orientation. It still cannot know whether an offcut from one row fits another row, whether the pattern staggers joints or whether centred cuts are required. A drawn layout remains the better method for high-value material.

Grout joints affect repeated modules

One joint is small, but dozens of joints accumulate. Small mosaic tiles can have much more total joint width than large-format tiles across the same surface. Ignoring joints can overestimate tile count in a long grid, while placing a joint after every tile including the final edge can underestimate available surface.

Use the planned finished joint, not a nominal spacer label without checking product tolerances and installation requirements. Tile calibre, edge type, substrate variation, pattern and applicable guidance influence acceptable joint width.

The calculator includes joint width only in the directional grid. It does not calculate grout volume.

Choose the correct tile dimensions

Nominal size and actual manufactured size can differ. A product sold as 300 × 600 millimetres may have actual dimensions designed for a module including the joint. Rectified and non-rectified products can use different sizing conventions.

Use the manufacturer’s actual size and recommended joint where available. If a tile is part of a modular pattern, a simple single-size grid may be invalid because several units are designed to align through their combined dimensions.

Waste and breakage allowance

Allowance covers cut losses, unusable offcuts, accidental damage, selection for appearance, future repairs and uncertainty. A regular straight layout can be efficient. Diagonal work increases edge cuts. Herringbone, borders, niches, columns, plumbing penetrations and many corners increase complexity.

Fragile stone, strong veining or shade selection can also require more stock. There is no universal percentage that works for every room and material. Use a layout-specific allowance agreed with the installer and supplier.

Do not treat waste as permission to skip careful layout. A sensible starting line can both improve appearance and reduce unusable slivers.

Whole boxes and production information

Retail tile is commonly sold in complete boxes. Enter the actual pieces per box for the selected tile. Box count is:

boxes = ceiling(purchase tiles ÷ tiles per box)

Some suppliers sell individual pieces, trim or mosaics differently. Enter zero for tiles per box when only the piece count is needed.

Check shade, calibre, production lot and product code on every carton. Natural and manufactured variation may be intentional, but incompatible lots can make repairs or adjacent areas visibly different. Retain labels with spare material.

Centre lines and edge cuts

A professional layout often centres the field or balances edge cuts rather than simply starting with a full tile at one corner. That choice can change how many pieces are usable. A centred layout may split the remainder across two sides, and two half-width edge pieces do not always come efficiently from one tile after kerf, defects and pattern matching.

Dry-lay critical rows or draw them to scale. Check doorways, visible focal walls, bath edges, cabinetry and transitions. Avoid tiny slivers where practical and follow movement-joint and perimeter requirements.

Staggered and patterned layouts

Brick bond, one-third offset, herringbone, basketweave, diagonal and multi-size modular patterns cannot be represented by a single rows-times-columns formula. Their repeats, cut directions and reuse rules differ.

Large rectangular tile may also have offset restrictions related to warpage and lippage control. The visually familiar half-offset pattern is not automatically suitable for every product. Follow tile and setting-material manufacturer instructions and recognized installation guidance.

For a pattern, calculate the repeat module or create a scaled takeoff, then add pattern-appropriate waste.

Floors, walls and wet areas

The area arithmetic works for a rectangular floor or wall, but installation systems differ. Wet areas require suitable substrate, waterproofing details, penetrations, slopes and transitions. A tile quantity does not establish that a wall can support the assembly or that a floor meets deflection and flatness requirements.

Shower floors are often sloped and may use smaller tile for drainage geometry. Measure actual planes or use a project takeoff. Do not subtract drains and small penetrations automatically; their area saving is often offset by cuts.

Openings, niches and returns

Large doors or windows can be deducted from a wall field, but reveals, sills and returns may need tile added back. A niche has a front opening that removes field area and multiple internal planes that add area. Treat each plane as a separate rectangle and avoid double-counting.

Small openings typically do not save a whole tile. A tile cut around a pipe may consume one full piece even though the pipe area is tiny. Keep such areas in the count unless a detailed layout proves reuse.

Trim and specialty pieces

Bullnose, cove base, edge profiles, corners, thresholds and decorative bands are not ordinary field tiles. Measure them by linear length or individual location. Their pack sizes and waste rates can differ from the main tile.

Changes in plane may require movement accommodation or profiles rather than a field tile cut. Select compatible components as part of the installation system.

The calculator reports field tiles only.

Grout, adhesive and membrane are separate

Grout coverage depends on tile length, width, thickness and joint width, plus product density and waste. Adhesive or mortar coverage depends on trowel notch, substrate flatness, tile back profile and achieved coverage. Waterproofing and uncoupling products use their own coverage and overlap rules.

Do not infer those quantities from tile-box count. Use the exact manufacturer coverage guidance and site conditions for each product.

Substrate preparation

Tile performs as part of an assembly. Substrate flatness, strength, movement, cleanliness and moisture condition affect installation. Large-format tile makes flatness particularly important because the unit bridges a longer distance.

Quantity calculations cannot diagnose cracks, movement or unsuitable surfaces. Obtain appropriate assessment, use compatible preparation products and comply with project specifications and local requirements.

Measurement and rounding

Measure in several places because walls may not be square or parallel. Record the largest relevant dimension when the field must cover it, but plan centred or tapered cuts rather than assuming a perfect rectangle. Keep full precision through conversions and round only whole tiles and boxes at the end.

An output of 83 tiles is not a guarantee that 83 pieces can express the chosen pattern. It is a transparent straight-grid estimate based on the entered orientation and joint.

A tile ordering checklist

Before buying, verify:

  • actual surface dimensions and every additional return or niche;
  • actual tile dimensions rather than only nominal marketing size;
  • manufacturer-recommended grout joint and layout limitations;
  • tile orientation, pattern, centre lines and edge cuts;
  • waste allowance for material, cuts and breakage;
  • tiles per box and whether only full boxes are sold;
  • compatible shade, calibre, lot and product code;
  • specialty trims measured separately;
  • setting materials, grout and membranes estimated from their own data;
  • substrate and wet-area requirements reviewed by a competent person.

Limits of this calculator

This tool models one rectangular surface and one straight rectangular tile orientation. It counts a simple grid using the entered joint, adds a percentage allowance and rounds by pieces per box. It does not optimize offcut reuse, centre the layout, calculate diagonal or staggered patterns, model mixed-size modules, measure niches, calculate grout or adhesive, or assess installation suitability.

Use it for an initial field-tile estimate, then verify complex or expensive work with a scaled layout, product instructions and an experienced installer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the number of tiles?

For a straight rectangular layout, calculate how many tile modules fit along each surface direction, round each direction up, and multiply the two counts. Then add cutting and breakage allowance.

Does grout-gap width affect tile count?

Yes, especially across many small tiles. The calculator treats each repeating module as tile size plus joint width while avoiding a required joint beyond the final edge.

How much tile waste should I add?

A straightforward grid often uses around ten percent, but diagonal patterns, fragile material, colour selection, many obstacles or complex cuts may require more. Follow installer and supplier advice.

Why can area division differ from a row-and-column count?

Area division assumes every offcut can be reused perfectly. A grid count respects whole pieces needed along each direction, so it can be higher when the surface dimensions do not divide evenly.

Does the calculator handle diagonal or herringbone patterns?

No. It models one straight rectangular orientation. Diagonal, staggered, herringbone, border and mixed-size layouts need a pattern-specific takeoff or a measured layout plan.

Should spare tiles come from the same batch?

Yes when possible. Shade, calibre and surface variation can differ between production lots. Keeping labelled spare tiles makes later repairs more likely to match.
